1950 Olds Recording Trumpet - Los Angeles Model
Serial 53xxx

ORIGINAL CONDITION BEFORE WORK STARTED

CONDITION AFTER WORK COMPLETE

This is a nice vintage Olds Recording Trumpet built in 1950 in the Los Angeles plant in California.  The Olds company was still at that time making these one at a time until later in the 1950s and 1960s.  This trumpet was serviced meaning it was ultrasonically cleaned, all parts disassembled and cleaned, dents/dings removed, valves and slides checked, parts then reassembled and lubricated with premium valve oil and tuning slide lube and finally play tested.

The trumpet is a nice candidate for restoration or can be played as is in it's vintage condition.  It plays extremely well and all parts are moving as they should.  The plating on the valves is very good - excellent and they have great compression.  The numbers on the valves match the serial number of the horn.

These Recordings have a different valve design than other Olds in that they have moved forward the valve cluster on the horn compared to other trumpets.  This is known as a balanced design trumpet.  As well, the middle valve is offset from the other two which is a more ergonomically design since the middle finger is longer than the other two used to play the trumpet with.

The trumpet sounds great.  The valve action on this horn is also very nice in that the throw on the valves is very short and the valves themselves have a wonderful action.  I noticed that different mouthpieces definitely produce a different sound.  I tried a couple of old Conn mouthpieces and was not impressed.  I then tried an old Olds 3 mouthpiece and the horn came to life.  It must have known...
